A: Prairie Home Cemetery is a municipal cemetery owned by the City of Waukesha. Although owned by the city, the cemetery runs as a private enterprise and receives no tax dollars to operate. Instead, revenue comes from the sale of property such as graves, crypts, and niches, as well as from additional programs such as flowerbeds, endowments, and investments.

Q: What is an endowment?
A: An endowment is a one-time fee that is paid to ensure the provision of the particular item, such as care of a flowerbed, in perpetuity.

Q: What is Perpetual Care?
A: A portion of the purchase price of property is placed in a trust fund. The interest earned is used to provide uniform general care in perpetuity for graves, crypts, niches, and general cemetery maintenance, such as mowing and trimming. Perpetual care does not include decoration services such as wreaths and flowerbeds.
